It's Christmas!
Branch members enjoyed some festive fun at the annual Christmas Party, this year held at the Royal Hotel in Scunthorpe.
Plus a festive pub crawl through Doncaster one December Saturday.
18th Scunthorpe and District Beer Festival
The 18th Scunthorpe Beer Festival took place in the function room of the Royal Hotel on Doncaster Road in the centre of Scunthorpe
from 24-27 September.
This was a new venue for the festival but was well received by those attending. There was also lots of praise for the
range of beers and ciders. Nearly all the beers proved popular and comprised twelve handpulled beers from Yorkshire
on two separate bars, supported by some great beers from London and the South and our own region of the East Midlands.
The Friday evening festival session was exceptionally busy, Saturday evening less so, but overall we're happy with how it went.
Beer of the festival was Orange Choco Stout (5.2% ABV) from Nook Brewhouse based in Holmfirth, followed by Wild Gravity (5.2%)
from BAD Co in Dishforth in 2nd place, and a tie for third between Captain Oates Mild (4.5%) from Selby's Brown Cow Brewery
and Grand Havana Smoked Porter (5.0%) from Brighton Bier in Brighton (where else?).
The festival food provided by the Royal Hotel was also excellent and proved popular with customers throughout.
Many thanks to all those who came along to enjoy the beers and ciders, and to our sponsors for their valuable support.
And finally a huge thank you to all the hardworking CAMRA volunteers who helped to set up and run the beer festival -
we couldn't have done it without you! All being well we'll see you again at the Royal for the 2016 beer festival.
Some post festival comments received are shown below:
"Well done to all who organise and run what is a great little festival with a really good range of well served beers,
just a pity we couldn't have stayed longer, and yep, the Choco Orange Stout was particularly lovely." (Andy Bill Brader, Facebook)
"Quick note to say congratulations on yet another excellent beer festival! Some really good beers on offer this year
to suit most tastes. Just a shame we didn't get the usual support this year, the rugby on Saturday evening must have
been to blame. As long as we broke even or even made a couple of bob it gives us hope for next year!!"

Trip to Magic Rock,
Huddersfield
After a very enjoyable and informative trip to Magic Rock's original brewery early in the year
the branch was very excited to hear about further developments and to visit the new brewery
complete with their first Brewery Tap.
A great day was had and please read up about developments at
Magic Rock
Summer Pub of the Season Presentation
The Horn Inn, Messingham
Our Pub of the Season award for Summer 2015 went to the
Horn Inn in Messingham. This open-plan village
local has been refurbished to a high standard and
opened up again for business on 8th April this year after
a period of closure.
The pub is leased from Enterprise Inns by licensee
Adam Kaye, who also runs two other pubs.
Manageress at the Horn Inn is Kate Boswell, who
offers Black Sheep Best Bitter as a stock real ale at the
pub, plus up to five rotating guest real ales and a real
cider. There is an extensive food menu
comprising pub classics and gastro dishes plus cocktail
and quiz nights.
It's good to see the Horn Inn thriving again, and we
congratulate Kate and all staff on their award.
For more information visit the Pub of the Seasonlink.
Trip to Sunfest
A beautiful Saturday in July saw a merry group of members attend one of the branch's
favourite events of the year at the Rising Sun in Sheffield.
Pub of the Year
Scunthorpe and District's Pub of the Year 2015 was awarded to The Royal Oak, Snitterby.
A previous winner, the Royal oak continues to serve an excellent range of quality ales
and branch chairman, Mike Sayers, was pleased to present the award to Licensee, Dave Murray.
Spring Pub of the Season Presentation
The Nelthorpe Arms, Brigg
This renowned Brigg hostelry, also known as 'Scanlons', was closed down in January 2014
then taken over by Sue Rainton and Phil Harrison, both involved in engineering, who
took a shine to the pub and its stock of outbuildings.
The Nelthorpe reopened in June 2104 and the Toll Bar restaurant
was added in 2015, which was named after the historic Brigg toll once
located at the nearby bridge over the Ancholme.
Chris Saddington was appointed
General Manager, after experience gained in running pubs in Hull.
Four real ales are generally offered - Greene King IPA and Abbot are regular beers
and guest beers from the likes of the Yorkshire Brewing Co, Springhead, Thornbridge,
Black Sheep and Batemans plus real ciders and craft bottled beers.
Real ciders are featured from Aspalls, Westons and Gwynt-Y-Ddraig.
Beer festivals and live acoustic music have become features.
This well-deserved award was presented on Saturday 9th May and for more information visit
the Pub of the Season page.
Mild in May
CAMRA designates May as Mild month.
The branch held a social at the Blue Bell, Scunthorpe and the Chairman presented
the pub with a Mild Award certificate to show our appreciation of them featuring draught milds during May.
Trip to Doncaster Beer Festival
Despite no interest in a planned Saturday trip it would seem many of our members
(clearly of a certain age and/or disposition ; ) had time on their hands to independently
migrate there on the Friday to enjoy a full selection of beers.
Something to take into account for next year.
Some select members were chosen to take part in the tasting panel to decide the winning festival beers.
Trip to Leeds Beer Festival
A select group of gentlemen branch members thoroughly enjoyed a trip to Leeds Beer Festival in March
followed by a tour of some fine city pubs.
Winter Pub of the Season Presentation
The Haven Inn, Barrow Haven
A previous Pub of the Season, the Haven Inn underwent extensive
refurbishment last year in a dramatic fashion, due to being a victim of the
tidal surge of 5th December 2013 which devastated large parts of the
local area.
Closed for five months, the Haven Inn opened its doors again on Friday
2nd May 2014 for drinks and was packed out with regulars eager to
return.
We congratulate landlady, Gillian Bayram, and her staff on their resilience, hard work and
well-deserved success with the presentation of the award on Saturday
7th March.

Branch Trip to Magic Rock Brewery in Huddersfield
We presented Joe, the brewer, with a certificate celebrating their beer 'High Wire' being voted
Beer of the Festival at the 2014 Scunthorpe and district Beer Festival.
This was followed by a tour of the brewery.
Then several of our members felt it necessary to 'feel the magic'.
