Obviously 2020 events were soon curtailed due to the pandemic but we did start the year off with the following:

2020 Events

Winter Pub of the Season Presentation to The White Swan, Barton-Upon-Humber

On a windy Saturday in February, local branch members gathered at the White Swan in Barton-upon-Humber to present them with the Scunthorpe & District CAMRA Winter Pub of the Season award.

A good gathering enjoyed draught beers from Great Newsome, Parkway and Twisted Wheel breweries. Branch member Christine Andrew presented White Swan licensee Greg Robson with a framed certificate to display in the pub. The White Swan is no stranger to local CAMRA awards and Greg is hoping to eventually collect an award for every season!

With many thanks to Greg and Lisa for keeping such a great pub and to all those who turned up on the day to show their support.

Manchester Beer & Cider Festival

On a gloomy midweek day in January a handful of Scunthorpe & District CAMRA members made their way by train to Manchester for the 2020 Manchester Beer & Cider Festival, held at the cavernous Manchester Central building near Deansgate Station.

This is one of the biggest and best beer festivals in the north, with over 750 beers to choose from and our mood was suitably lifted on arrival. There was ample seating available, so we were able to sit down, peruse the programme and select our beers.

And what a choice of amazing beers from a new Coast to Coast Bar, featuring beers from northern breweries from east to west, many brewery bars including Blackjack, Tiny Rebel and Thornbridge, a Beers from the Wood Bar with all beers served from wooden barrels, plus keykeg bars, foreign beer bars, a substantial cider and perry bar and even a gin bar!

Tasting highlights included Cloudwater Jesterday (4.0% ABV), a hoppy red ale made with the new British Jester hop, Cydonia (4.8%), a hazy, hoppy, pale ale, a collaboration brew between Track and St Mars of the Desert, Donkeystone Javanilla (5.0%), a delicious, rich, coffee stout, a salted caramel version of Tiny Rebel's Stay Puft (5.2%) marshmallow porter and an Old Ale from Marble aged in Rioja wine barrels at a whopping 10.8%! By late afternoon we'd just about had our fill, and pausing only at the Piccadilly Tap for a swift half, we made our way back to the station and the journey home.

It proved to be a long day, but well worth it and hopefully we'll be able to do it all over again next year!
