BRANCH CHRISTMAS PARTY

On a Friday afternoon in December (dubbed ‘Mad Friday’ by the Yarborough licensee), Scunthorpe & District branch members and friends gathered in the back room room of the Yarborough Hunt in Brigg for the branch Christmas party.

We started two hours earlier than originally planned as a concession to Covid, as we thought the pub would be quieter at this time and thankfully this proved to be the case. We also abandoned our usual DIY buffet in favour of either a ‘bring your own’ or ‘buy your own’ food option. Debbie kindly arranged for a local caterer to supply the latter, consisting of a sandwich collection, quiche, sausage rolls, crisps and cake and very nice they were too.

Other than that it was business as usual with Christmas jumpers to the fore! Paul and Beverley took a turn this year to produce the Christmas quiz which was won by the Three Amigos team (Mark, Gill and Debbie), who were rewarded with a four pack of bottled Christmas beers for their efforts. A Christmas raffle also proved popular and the prizes of Christmas and craft beers were fairly equally shared out among those attending.

The Yarborough offered a varied selection of draught beers including Lincolnshire Craft Beers Christmas Cheers (which is brewed to have a hint of whisky), Theakston Christmas Ale (with Christmas spices), Woodfordes Nog (a dark ale) and later on Acorn Cracker (a Christmas pale ale brewed with American and English hops) and these went down well.

Overall it was a very enjoyable event with good company, good food and beer, accompanied by the seasonal exchange of Christmas cards! Thanks to everyone who came along to the party and best wishes to all for Christmas and the New Year.

SCUNTHORPE TOWN CENTRE PUB CRAWL

On a crisp November Saturday lunchtime, members of Scunthorpe & District Branch and friends gathered in the centre of Scunthorpe for a pub crawl of local hostelries, our first social event for many a month.

The first port of call was the Honest Lawyer, now under new ownership and recently tastefully refurbished. Their real ale offerings were the excellent Belgian Blue and Sixer from Bradfield Brewery, both on top form and we also tried some items from their new tapas menu which were very tasty.

Suitably fed and watered we then moved on to the Black Door, Scunthorpe's newest cocktail bar, which also stocks a variety of craft beers on draught and in cans and bottles. On draught that day they had Tiny Rebel Electric Boogaloo, a hazy passion fruit session IPA, plus Wiper & True Kaleidoscope and Lost & Grounded Wanna Go To The Sun pale ales, all very good. The Black Door has excellent service, very comfortable fixtures and fittings and is nicely decorated, making it a pleasure to drink there.

Finally we moved on to old favourite, the Blue Bell, where we were able to sample Hop Studio's Hometown Hero, a modern take on a bitter and Acorn’s Guiding Light, a dark, fruity ale, both full of flavour.

Blue_Bell All in all a very enjoyable afternoon, with good company and a pleasing level of support. Hopefully the start of more branch social events. Thanks to all who participated in the pub crawl and to the three pubs involved for some excellent beers.
