Scunthorpe & District CAMRA

Scunthorpe & District CAMRA are adopting the CAMRA Locale scheme which seeks to promote the products of local breweries within a specified distance of a central point within the branch area. This avoids excessive 'beer miles' if local pubs feature their beers.

The scheme was developed by Nottingham CAMRA following the closure of Hardy & Hansons and the transfer of their beers to Greene King's Brewery in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

We are defining a radius of 30 miles from Scunthorpe as our catchment area, which would take in breweries such as DarkTribe, Tom Wood, Willy's, Grafters, Idle, Cathedral and Thorne. We will be distributing LocAle publicity material to pubs who regularly stock LocAle beers and who wish to participate in the scheme, as well as listing them on the website.

The main benefits of the scheme are:
Encourages pubs to sell local beer and reduces the'beer miles', thus benefiting the environment
Ensures more variety and diversity to the consumer, and hence better sales for the pub
Helps sustain local microbrewers.
Helps the local economy.

LocAle Breweries

DarkTribe Brewery

Tom Woods

Highwood Brewery was set up by the Wood family on the family farm at Melton Ross, near Brigg, in 1995, and used their own grown barley to produce a range of real ales under the 'Tom Wood' name.

Beers: Tom Wood Best Bitter (3.6%), Lincoln Gold (4.0%), Old Timber (4.3%) and Bomber County (4.8%) seasonal beers

Grafters Brewery

Microbrewery set up in 2007 adjacent to the Half Moon at Willingham-by-Stow, by licensee Phil Troop on a 2.5 barrel plant and their session bitter, Moonlight, won beer of the festival at the Peterborough Beer Festival in 2009. The brewery has undergone recent expansion adding more beers to its range.

Old Mill Brewery

The brewery was opened in 1983 and the Brewery tap, the Brewer's Arms in Snaith was purchased in 1984 with many more pubs to follow over the years. Old Mill produce a range of quality real ales for the local and national market and are dedicated to the continued quality of all permanent and seasonal beers and excellent service which all their customers can expect.

Willy's Brewery

Brewery set up in 1989 within Willy's seafront pub at Cleethorpes. Comprises a 5-barrel plant, with a maximum output of 15 barrels a week. Brewery can be viewed from the pub or street. Supplies Willy's pub.

Idle Brewery

Brewery set up at the back of the White Hart Inn in a converted stable on the west bank of the River Trent and alongside the River Idle. Began production in 2007.

Whalebone Brewery

A pub brewery opened by former Eight Jolly Brewers licensee Alex Craig when he took over the Whalebone pub in Hull in 2002. The beer names are connected with the former whaling industry in the city. Most beers are brewed for consumption in the pub, but occasionally make appearances at beer festivals.

Axholme Brewing Company

Axholme Brewing Company was set up in early 2012 by husband and wife team Mike & Jules Richards. They aim to produce a range of interesting cask and bottled beers in both traditional and modern styles.
